Health and Safety Induction

All new staff and students require a Health and Safety Induction.

Staff:  All new University staff must attend the University Induction which includes some health and safety information.  However, the new staff member must also receive a local health and safety induction before they start work.  It is the responsibility of the person employing the new person to arrange and / or provide this.  The induction should cover general information eg First Aid arrangements as well as the more detailed information relevant to the area the person will work in and the activities they will undertake. 

Undergraduates / Postgraduates:  The College H&S Officer will give undergraduates a Health and Safety Induction at the start of their first year and a separate, specific Induction to PhD students. However, Schools must then ensure this is supported with additional health and safety information, relevant to the modules being undertaken.

MRes / MSc etc:  Schools must ensure such students are provided with an appropriate Health and Safety Induction, with additional health and safety information then provided as necessary throughout their studies at the University.

NOTE: Staff and students working at another organisation eg joint collaboration project must be provided with a suitable Safety Induction by the host organisation before they start work. As part of this process it is imperative staff / students notify their Bangor University Line Managers, Supervisors etc of any concerns regarding the host organisation immediately.  This will ensure prompt action is taken.

Responsibilities

All members of staff and students have a legal obligation to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and for the safety of others who may be affected by their actions or inactions.   They must also comply with the rules and regulations outlined in the University Health and Safety Policy and other subordinate and associated policies and procedures.  

It is the legal duty of all staff and students whilst at work / study or whilst away from the University on University business or related activities to: 

  • Behave responsibly and to take reasonable care for the health and safety of themselves and other persons who may be affected by their work or activities.
  • Co-operate with all staff and students to enable them to carry out their own health and safety duties.
  • Report to supervisory staff any situation, working practice or procedure they suspect is potentially hazardous.
  • Report all accidents and incidents to supervisory staff or other appropriate person(s).
  • Use, but not misuse, protective clothing, equipment or materials provided in the interests of health and safety.
  • Comply with the health and safety rules, policies and instructions, both spoken and written, issued to them.
  • Use machinery, plant or equipment in the manner for which they were designed and in accordance with the appropriate safety precautions.

Any persons contravening these requirements may be subject to University disciplinary proceedings and / or possible legal action by the Enforcing Authorities.
